At Least It Didn’t Explode When Hit. 1976 Vega

Let’s face it, an automotive blog hasn’t really arrived until it features a Vega.  The Vega is one of the most noteworthy American cars ever built.  It was Chevrolet’s answer to the increasing popularity of economical Japanese cars. This 1976 example has survived in its original form for 34 years.

Item of interest: www.jalopnik.com ran a similar story about the Brasilia today.

http://jalopnik.com/5724950/for-12000-this-brazilian-vw-lets-you-grin-and-bare-it

They added a lot of too-easy jokes about thongs and bikini waxes, but it’s pretty much the same otherwise.  Nary a hat tip to this site.

Worldly: Brazilian Volkswagen Registered in Mexico, For Sale in Orem, Utah.

The VW Brasilia was built by Volkswagen of Brazil from 1973-1982.  This one is somehow in Orem Utah, although the owner says it’s registered in Mexico.  (Don’t ask how hard it would be to get a U.S. registration.  No idea.  Just hope it doesn’t have to go through the I.N.S.)

Hit it for more on this sweet globetrotter…

I have a new hero! Daily driving a 1930 Model A for a year.

People do stupid things.  Other people do awesome things.  Johnathan Klinger does “Boom! Goes the Dynamite” things.
Yep, he is driving a 1930 Model A Ford as his only car for 365 days.  His blog is at http://www.365daysofa.com/ He details everything from being the center of attention to fixing oil and fuel leaks.

Being an automobile owner was far more work and maintenance back then. Things like idle mixture and timing and other engine adjustments were just a part of each day’s motoring.  The A didn’t have a radio, a heater, cupholders, or any of the things that make modern cars nice…and dull.

This is a great idea.  I should have thought of it…and done it…think I could add some cup holders?

Not For Hills: 1956 Hillman

Most people don’t have a strong opinion on the 1956 Hillman Husky wagon.  In fact, most people have never seen one, let alone one for sale, let alone one for sale in Utah.  Well this post marks the end of all those regrettable things.  Presenting: the nicest 1956 Hillman Husky we’ve ever seen…for sale…in Utah – and you’ll probably form an opinion here too.

Didn’t even know there was a Medallion Edition! ’82 LeBaron Convertible.

First of all, let me clarify:  This car was a monstrous pile of early 80’s American crap when it was new, and it still is.  1982 may well have been the worst year in the history of the American car.  However, the 56k odometer and the state of preservation makes it kind of retro-cool/hipster sweet.  Kind of.

It's 1982 and you are heading home with your first BetaMax machine.

The only logical explanation for this car to be in this condition is that it belonged to a little old lady who only drove it to church and bridge club.  We can’t decide if we should thank her or hate her for that.  Hit the jump for more of the 80’s nostalgia.

How to write a craigslist ad: 1970 Lady Lovin’ Lincoln

When writing car ads, some people lie about how nice the car is, some lie about how many miles are on the car, others don’t really describe anything at all.  Then there are the real gems.  The entertaining, the poetic, the brilliant.  Hit the jump for the complete text of this pulitzer-worthy craigslist entry.

I can see the back of the car from here! Ha ha, just kidding.

A car to Bond with: 1974 Jensen Interceptor.

Let me start by saying that I am not much on imports.  However, there are plenty of imports out there I would do unspeakable things to own.  I would do mildly unspeakable things for this Jensen.  Then I would tell people I am a double agent and female spies would throw themselves at me in yachts and at fancy dinner parties.

Fishing for a deal? 1965 Rambler Marlin

Get it? Fishing? Hoo-boy!  See what I did there?

Here’s a car that has been on my list of things I need to own sometime in my life since I saw one for the first time in a junkyard in 1988. This one seems to be in better shape than the one from the junkyard. Being a craigslist ad, the photos are pretty poor, but for the $4000.00 asking price, it looks like it may be a deal.

Hit the jump for more on this car, and a bonus history lesson!

The Midget in the Crawlspace

Hippodrome Fair grounds midget racer

Growing up, I kept hearing mention of a midget in my Grandpa’s crawlspace. I pictured a little person eating scraps from the dinner table. Later, I found out it was actually a race car dating back to the 1940s. Continue reading
