“The Bend” At Bonneville Speed Week

This post was originally written for and appeared here, at hooniverse.com.

Everyone calls it “The bend”.  You can think of it as Burning Man for Gearheads.  What is it?  It’s a place where a portion of the throng of attendees camp during Speed Week.  The Bonneville Salt Flats are situated just a few miles from Wendover, Nevada but the hotels in town can’t hold all of the people that show up for this event.

The solution?  Camp along the road that leads out to the salt.

Speed week is about half over for 2012.  With the end of the weekend, most of the onlookers have gone home and the serious racers linger on the salt.  It remains to be seen which records will stand and which will fall.  What we do know is that it was a beautiful weekend on the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Padded Vinyl Landau Roofs For Everyone! The 1987 Chrysler Lineup

Take several different Chrysler ads from 1987 and mash them up into a 3 minute video and what do you get?  You get a humorous glimpse at the sorry state of Chrysler at the time.  Landau roofs, integrated coach lights, pillow-style seats, and wood-tone instrument panels made Chrysler’s drive to be the best a fruitless one.

I Want That Job: R/C Mini Cooper Discus Retriever

Those wry Brits have an adorable ingenious method for retrieving the discus and the javelins thrown at this year’s summer games.  A remote controlled Mini Cooper.  The judges drop the hardware in the car’s sunroof and some lucky schmo drives it back to the throwing area.  Brilliant!

Hit the jump for the cuteness in video form.

Quick Hitter: Great Review Of “Boys Of Bonneville”

The film, “Boys of Bonneville” has been discussed here before, but not nearly to the extent that Jesse of www.justacarguy.com has done.  His review caught my eye when I noticed a couple of my photos in his post.

It’s a great review of the film and discussion of Ab Jenkins and the Meteors.  Nice work, Jesse, and thanks for the shout-out to this site!

So That’s Who It’s For: Lil’ Kenny Sighting

Well this was a treat.  I have never seen one in person but, as I strolled along at a recent car show, there it was.  A miniature semi truck.  Why, you ask, would someone want a this?  Because Kenworth.
